In a friendly discussion you don’t want to present your opin
ions so strongly that you start an argument. For example, you
may want to present an opinion in a more tentative way like
this:
> I sometimes think that....
> Would you agree th a t.... ?
> Do you think it's right to say th a t.... ?
> Well, I ’ve heard th a t......
And you may want to ask other people to explain their point
of view more exactly using expressions like these:
, y I didn 7 quite follow what you were saying a b o u t....
> I don 7 quite see what you 're getting at.

There is not much difference between telling someone how
something works and instructing them how to do it themselves.
However, more detail and more repetition is needed. When
giving instructions, we often link the steps together like this:
> First o f a l l .....
> The first thing you have to do i s ......
V After y o u ’ve done that y o u .....
> The next thing you do i s .....
> Oh, and by the way, don t forget t o .....
> Make sure you remember t o ......
> Oil, and be careful not t o ......
The amount o f detail and repetition usually depends on who
you are talking to and how much they know already.
