A novel lectin was isolated from leaves of the Japanesecycad,Cycas revolutaThunb. (gymnosperm), and its char-acteristics including amino acid composition, molecularmass, carbohydrate binding specificity and partial aminoacid sequences were examined. The inhibition analysis ofhemagglutinating activity with various sugars showed thatthe lectin has a carbohydrate-binding specificity similar tothose of mannose recognizing, jacalin-related lectins. Partialamino acid sequences of the lysylendopeptic peptides showsthat the lectinmight have a repeating structure andbelong tothe jacalin-related lectin family....
