Theprogramprovidessportsinfrastructuretoyouthwhoattendruralmiddleschools,andhelpsthemdevelopexcitementforthelearningofscience,language,andlifeskillsusingsportsasameanstoappliedlearning.Theoverallgoalistohelpyouthdevelopthemotivation,confidence,andotherskillsneededtoonedayobtainahighereducation,astheprogram’scoacheshavedone.CollegiateathletesfromtopU.S.universitieswhicharerivalsinathleticcompetitionspartnerwithbilingualcollegestudentsandhighschoolstudentsneartheprojectareatoruninteractivesportslearningcampsduringthesummer,withanadditionalemphasisonhowtoaccessandbenefitmostfromhighereducationinAmericaandthehostcountry,currentlyVietnam.Vietnamesecollegestudentsfromanyyearinschoolareeligibletoparticipate,providedtheyarestudentsofCanThoUniversity(theprogram’sprimarypartneruniversity),arefluentinEnglishand/orknowledgeableaboutsports,andhaveaninterestinfurtheringtheprogram’sgoals.Whilestudentsfromallmajorsareeligibletoapply,preferencewillbegiventoEnglishmajors,EnglishEducationmajors,andPhysicalEducationmajors.2008PROGRAMInsummer2008,20collegestudentsorgraduatesofCanThoUniversity,10highschoolstudentsfromtheHoaAnCommune,and20studentathletesfromDukeUniversityandtheUniversityofNorthCarolinaintheUnitedStatesparticipatedascoachesintwothreeweeksportslearningcamps(halfineach)for200Vietnameseyouth.Theyouthwererising6th9thgraders,andthecampswereheldonthegroundsofHoaAnSecondarySchool,themiddleschoolforchildrenwholiveintheHoaAnCommuneintheHauGiangprovince.Theprogramalsoprovidedsportsinfrastructuretotheyouthintheformofsportsequipmentdonatedtotheschoolandafiveinonesportscourtbuiltnexttothemiddleschoolallowingfortheplayofsoccer,tennis,volleyball,basketball,andbadminton.Overthecourseofthreeweekscoachestaughtoneoffivesportsandoneoffivesportsthemedacademicclassestofiveteamsof10youthfromonegradeinthemorningandfiveteamsof10youthfromadifferentgradeintheafternoon.Inboththemorningandafternoon,theyalsotaughtoneofthefiveteamsinTeamBuildingandHigherEducation(everyday),theImportanceandBenefitsofSports(firstweekonly),andFitnessandConditioning(secondweekonly).2009PROGRAMSTRUCTUREInsummer2009,fourthreeweekcampswillbeheldattheHoaAnSecondarySchool.8VietnamesecollegestudentsfromCanThoUniversitywillparticipateineachofthethreeweeksessionsascoaches.AVietnamesecollegestudentwhoparticipatedintheprograminsummer2008willserveastheVietnameseCollegeStudentDirectorforeachsession.Eachsessionofcoacheswillworkwith96childrenfromasinglegrade(rising6th,7th,8th,or9thgraders),48forfourhoursinthemorningand48forfourhoursintheafternoon.Theyouthinthemorningandafternoongroupswillbedividedinto4teamsof12.Atalltimesduringeachcamp,coachinggroupsconsistingof12Americanstudentathletes,2bilingualVietnamesecollegestudents,and1Vietnamesehighschoolstudentwhoparticipatedintheprogramlastyearwillworkwithasingleteamof12youth.CampswilllastMondayThursdayforthreeweeks.TheFridayofeachweekwillserveasacompetitiondayinwhichtheteamsofyouthwillcompeteagainsteachothertodemonstratewhattheylearnedintheclassesduringtheweek.Thespecificcampschedulewillbeavailableonthewebsite.ThestandarddayonwhichyourparticipationintheprogramwillbeginwillbetheSaturdaypriortothestartofthecamp.ThestandardenddayofyourparticipationwillbetheSundayfollowingthelastFridayofthecamp.AllVietnamesecollegestudentswillstayattheHoaAnResearchCenterduringtheirparticipationintheprogram.2009PROGRAMFINANCINGTheCoachforCollegeprogramwillpayforthelivingexpensesofselectedVietnamesecollegestudentsduringthedurationofeachthreeweeksessionviasupportfromDukeUniversity,UNCChapelHill,andanInternationalSportsProgrammingInitiativeGrantfromtheU.S. Page2DepartmentofState.Thisincludesaccomm ...
