There are many words and ideas used to describe and define working with people with a disability. As a result, people from non-English speaking backgrounds who need information in community languages experience two main barriers. The first is that some translations are wrong, unclear or refer to disability in negative ways.

The second is that some of the words and ideas belongparticularly to the Anglo-Australian culture and cannot be translated easily or simply into otherlanguages or cultures where there are no similar ideas. This often leads to inconsistency andmisunderstanding.The Multicultural Disability Advocacy Association conducted a project for the NSW Department ofAgeing, Disability and Home Care, in which professional translators translated 44 terms and ideasabout disability into 14 languages. The translations provided a plain English explanation andtranslation for each term, to help people better understand their meanings. Five bilingual membersof 14 communities cross-checked the translations to make sure they were correct, clear andsuitable.
