Ich Tri Vuong capsules (ITV) (components Ginkgo biloba, Radix Salviae miltiorrhi zae, Radix Astragali membranacei and Radix Angelicae sinensis) is used to treat diseases caused by atherosclerosis. Thisstudy was designed to assess the effects of ITV on plasma levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride,Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), High-density lipoprotein (HDL) and degrees of aorta atherosclerosis inrabbits with induced atherosclerosis by high cholesterol feeds. 50 New Zealand White rabbits weredivided into 5 groups, 10 per group. Experiment conditions were carried out for 8 weeks. Normal group:fed with water 2 ml/kg/day. Control group: fed cholesterol 0.5 g/kg/day + water 2 ml/kg. Atorvastatingroup: fed cholesterol 0.5 g/kg/day + Atorvastatin 5 mg/kg/day. ITV dose 1 group (60 mg/kg/day):fed cholesterol 0.5 g/kg/day+ ITV 60 mg/kg/day. ITV dose 2 group (180 mg/kg/day): fed cholesterol0.5 g/kg/ngày + ITV 180 mg/kg/day. The results suggest that Ich Tri Vuong 180 mg/kg/day maydecrease plasma levels of Total cholesterol and LDL and reduce atherosclerotic lesions of rabbitswith induced atherosclerosis by high cholesterol feeds when compared to control group. These effectswere equivalent to Atorvastatin 5 mg/kg/day and better than Ich Tri Vuong 60mg/kg/day. There wereno significant differences in HDL and Triglyceride of ITV groups when compared to control group.Key works: Ich Tri Vuong, Atherosclerosis, plasma lipidI. Lesions begin as fattystreaks, caused by massive accumulationof LDL oxidative product [1; 2] with highblood cholesterol LDL is increased inthe plasma as well, and LDL is subject tooxidative modifications in the subendothelialspace. Adherent monocytes migrate intothe subendothelial space and differentiateinto macrophages. Uptake of oxLDL bymacrophages via scavenger receptorsleads to foam cell formation. Interactionsbetween macrophage foam cells establisha chronic inflammatory process. Smoothmuscle cells migrate to the side ofinflammation. Necrosis of macrophageand smooth muscle cell-derived foamcells leads to the formation of a necroticcore and accumulation of extracellularcholesterol, creating a plaque. Macrophagesecretion of matrix metalloproteinases and27JOURNAL OF MEDICAL RESEARCHneovascularization contribute to weakeningof the fibrous plaque. The ruptured plaqueis exposed to plasma components,causing the recruitment of platelets, andthe formation of a thrombus on the medialportion of the arterial wall. The thrombusproliferates and secretes extracellularmatrix proteins that form a fibrous plaque[1]. Atherosclerosis progresses slowly overyears, and can cause stroke, myocardialinfarction, and peripheral artery disease.These are the mojor causes of disabilityand mortality. Therefore, treatment of lipidmetabolism disorders, especilly high specialLDL, plays an important role in preventingatherosclerosis requires [2]. Recently,research show that many herbal medicinesthat are used for treating diseases causedby atherosclerosis have an effect on lipidmetabolism and preventing atherosclerosis[3; 4].Ich Tri Vuong capsule componentinclude: Folium Ginkgo biloba, Radix Salviaemiltiorrhi zae, Radix Astragali membranacei,and Radix Angelicae sinensis. This capsculeis used in the treatment of chronic vertigo,headache, and insomnia caused by cerebralatherosclerosis.Ich tri vuong componentswere used in the “Angelica decoctionfor enriching plasma” (Radix Astragalimembranacei, Radix Angelicae sinensis),a traditional medicine formula whicheffects plasma lipid and the expressionof genes related to foam cell formation inthe early stages of atherosclerosis [5].Other components of Ich Tri Vuong, FoliumGinkgo biloba and Radix Salviae miltiorrhizae, also effect plasma lipids in in-vitro andin-vivo [6 - 8]. Research has shown that Ich28Tri Vuong capsule has no acute and subacute toxicities [9].
