A. READING OBJECTIVES Aims: Ways of using suitable non-verbal forms of communication to attract someone’s at tention such as waving, raising our hand, jumping up and down, whistling or clapping our hands and pointing at someone whether are polite or impolite. Lexical items: words / phrases related to ways of socializing Teaching aids: handouts Skills: Reading for gist and for specific information METHOD: Integrated, mainly communicative PROCEDURE: Teacher’s activities Students’ activities WARM-UP: T gives the picture and asks some students some Students’ answers may vary questions: 1. What are the people in the picture doing? 2. What will you do and say if you want to get your teacher’s attention in class? BEFORE YOU READ: T asks Ss to give the Vietnamese equivalents to the Whole class and individual work following words and then T reads these words and Ss repeat. 1. socialise (v) [sou∫əlaiz]: xã hội hóa 2. attention (n) [əten∫n]: sự chú ý 3. attract (v) [ətrækt]: lôi cuốn -> attract attention: lôi cuốn sự chú ý 4. either A or B: hoặc là A hoặc là B 5. verbal (adj) [və:bl] = spoken, not written: bằng lời, hữu ngôn # non-verbal: phi ngôn ngữ 6. wave (v) [weiv]: vẫy tay chào ai 7. suppose (v) [səpouz]: cho là, giả định 8. instance (n) [instəns]: ví dụ, trường hợp -> for instance = for example: ví dụ như 9. appropriate (v) [əproupriət] thích hợp 10. nod (to/at sb) (v) [nɔd]: gật đầu (đồng ý) -> a slight nod will do: một cái gật đầu là đủ 11. assistance (n) [əsistənt] = help: sự giúp đỡ 12. whistle (v) [wisl]: huýt, húyt sáo, huýt còi 13. clap (v) [klæp]: vỗ tay 14. informality (n) [,infɔ:mæliti]: sự thân mật, điều thân mật 15. attention getter (n.phr): cử chỉ thu hút 16. approach (v) [əprout∫] = come nearer: tiến đến gần WHILE YOU READ: Task 1: T reads loudly and slowly for Ss to check how to pronounce the passage and rereads faster. While reading, T asks Ss to find answers in Task 1 Ss work in group - T gives handout to and divides the class into 4 groups, and then gives handout below and asks Ss to work in groups. - T calls on a representative of each group to blackboard to give their keys. Ss listen and find out some new ones - When Ss finish their task, T calls on some Ss to read the answers aloud in front of the class. - T gives feedback and correct answers if necessary. Task 2: T asks each student to skim the passage so as to Work individually find answer of task 2 - When Ss finish their task, T calls on some Ss to read the answers aloud in front of the class. - T gives feedback and correct answers if necessary. Take notes Task 3: T rereads the passage faster and asks Ss to scan the passage to find out answers of task 3 Work individually - T divides the class into many groups and asks each group to give answers to blackboard. - T moves around class to give help. - After Ss finish their task, T calls on representatives of four groups to read the answers aloud in front of the class. - T gives feedback and correct answers if necessary Ss work in group AFTER YOU READ: T asks Ss these questions: - What do you think about whistling to attract Ss work individually someone’s attention in Vietnamese culture? - What is its meaning?
