By adopting a few simple techniques, parents who read to their children can considerablyincrease their childrens language d evelopment. It is surprising, b ut true. Ho w p arents talk to theirchildren makes a b ig d ifference in t he childrens language development. If a parent encourages thechild to actively respond to what the parent is reading, the childs language skills increase. A study was d one with two or three-year-old children and their parents. Half of the thirtychildren participants were in the experimental study; the o ther half acted as the control group. In theexperimental group, the parents were given a two -hour training session in which they were taught toask open-ended questions rather t han yes-no questions. Experimental p arents were alsoinstructed how to expand on their childrens answer, how to suggest alternative possibilities, and howto praise correct answers. At the beginning of the study, the children did not differ o n levels of language development,but at the end of o ne month, the children in the experimental group were 5.5 months ahead of thecontrol group on a test of verbal expression and vocabulary.
