Chemical oxidation technologies are predominantly used to addresscontaminants in the source area saturated zone and capillary fringe. Cost concernscan preclude the use of chemical oxidation technologies to address large and dilutepetroleum contaminant plumes. More frequently, chemical oxidation technologiesare employed to treat smaller source areas where the petroleum mass is moreconcentrated. However, where excessive petroleum contaminant mass exists inthe source area and where there is a significant thickness of mobile non-aqueousphase liquids (NAPLs), other remedial technologies (e.g., free product recovery)may need to precede chemical oxidation for the remediation to be safe and cost-effective. ...
