There exists a “communication gap” between thedevelopers of security technology and developersof networks. Network design is a well‐developedprocess that is based on the Open SystemsInterface (OSI)model. The OSImodel has severaladvantages when designing networks. It offersmodularity, flexibility, ease‐of‐use, andstandardization of protocols. The protocols ofdifferent layers can be easily combined to createstacks which allow modular development. Theimplementationofindividuallayerscanbechangedlater withoutmaking other adjustments, allowingflexibility in development. In contrast to networkdesign, secure network design is not a well‐developed process. There isn’t amethodology tomanage the complexity of security requirements.Securenetworkdesigndoesnotcontain the sameadvantagesasnetworkdesign....
