Since its inception in 1997, DOE’s Carbon SequestrationProgram – managed within FE and implemented byNETL – has been developing both core and supportingtechnologies through which CCS can become aneffective and economically viable option for reducingCO2 emissions from coal-based power plants (NETL,2007a). Successful R&D will enable CCS technologiesto overcome various technical, economic, and socialchallenges, such as cost-effective CO2 separation andtransport, long-term stability of CO2 sequestrationin underground formations, MVA, integration withpower generation systems, and public acceptance. Theprogrammatic timeline is to demonstrate a portfolioof safe and cost-effective CO2 capture, storage, andmitigation technologies at the commercial scale by2012, leading to substantial deployment and marketpenetration...
