Petroleum contaminant decomposition and in-situ destruction may beaccomplished using chemical oxidation technologies. In contrast to other remedialtechnologies, contaminant reduction can be seen in short time frames (e.g., weeksor months). As discussed in this chapter, a variety of chemical oxidants andapplication techniques can be used to bring oxidizing materials into contact withsubsurface contaminants to remediate the contamination. With sufficient contacttime with the organic contaminants, chemical oxidants may be capable ofconverting the petroleum hydrocarbon mass to carbon dioxide and water andultimately irreversibly reduce concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil andgroundwater.
