Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a majorcause of hospital admission and the most importantinfectious cause of death [1]. A rapid diagnosis andappropriate antibiotic treatment are essential to reducethe morbidity and mortality from CAP. In countries with ahigh tuberculosis (TB) burden, Mycobacterium tuberculosisis a frequent cause of CAP [2-4], and the differentialdiagnosis of TB from common bacterial pneumonia isdifficult. The varying clinical and radiographic presentationof CAP and TB according to patient age and comorbidityand the low sensitivity of acid-fast bacillus microscopymake it even more difficult to distinguish TB fromcommon bacterial pneumonia [5-7].
