The characteristics lines in X-rayspectra result from electronictransitions between inner atomicorbitals. The X-ray spectra for most heavyelements are much simpler than theUV/Vis spectra observed in ICP-OES,for example. (Only a few lines!!!) Big difference between X-ray and UVVis:The radiation is ionizing, anddoesn’t just excite electrons to higherlevels.
