This review summarizes the most recent state of haemo-globin (Hb) research based on the literature and our ownresults. In particular, an attempt is made to form a unifiedpicture for haemoglobin function by reconciling thecooperative oxygen binding with the stabilization of thebound dioxygen in aqueous solvent. The HbA moleculecontains two types ofabcontacts.
