Retinoid-binding proteins are indispensable for visual cyclesin both vertebrate and invertebrate retinas. These proteinsstabilize and transport hydrophobic retinoids in the hydro-philic environment of plasma and cytoplasm, and allowregeneration of visual pigments. Here, we identified a novelretinol-binding protein in the eye of a butterfly, Papilioxuthus. The protein that we term Papilioretinol-bindingprotein (PapilioRBP) is a major component of retinalsoluble proteins and exclusively binds 3-hydroxyretinol, andemits fluorescencepeakingat 480 nmunder ultraviolet (UV)illumination. ...
