The hydrogenase maturation proteins HypF and HypEcatalyze the synthesis of theCNligands of the active site ironof the NiFe-hydrogenases using carbamoylphosphate as asubstrate. HypE protein fromEscherichia coliwas purifiedfrom a transformant overexpressing thehypEgene from aplasmid. PurifiedHypE in gel filtration experiments behavespredominantly as a monomer. It does not contain statisti-cally significant amounts ofmetals or of cofactors absorbingin the UV and visible light range.
