Two paralogous genes,maeEandcitM, that encode putative malic enzymefamily members were identified in the Enterococcus faecalisgenome. MaeE(41 kDa) and CitM (42 kDa) share a high degree of homology betweenthem (47% identities and 68% conservative substitutions). However, thegenetic context of each gene suggested thatmaeEis associated with malateutilization whereascitM is linked to the citrate fermentation pathway.
