Perhaps the most widely used applications of bioinformatics are tools suchas psi-blast for searching sequence databases. We describe a recentlydeveloped protein database search algorithm calledrankprop. rankproprelies upon a precomputed network of pairwise protein similarities. Thealgorithm performs a diffusion operation from a specified query proteinacross the protein similarity network.
