Several microbial pathogens have been reported to interactwith glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) on cell surfaces and in theextracellularmatrix. Herewe demonstrate thatM protein, amajor surface-expressed virulence factor of the human bac-terial pathogen, Streptococcus pyogenes, mediates bindingto various forms of GAGs. Hence, S. pyogenesstrainsexpressing a large number of different types of M proteinsbound to dermatan sulfate (DS), highly sulfated fractions ofheparan sulfate (HS) and heparin, whereas strains deficientin M protein surface expression failed to interact with theseGAGs. ...
