We have studied the interaction ofb-17, a potent syntheticantimicrobialb-peptide, with phospholipids. We find thatunlikeother antimicrobial peptides suchasmagainin II,b-17facilitates the formation of nonbilayer phases, indicatingthat the peptide promotes negative curvature. Studies ofliposomal leakage also indicate a different mode of mem-brane interaction relative to magainin II, but both leakageandmembrane binding showthatb-17, likemagainin II, hasstrongaffinity formembranes containinganionic lipids....
