Lactoferrin (Lf), a multifunctional molecule present inmammalian secretions and blood, plays important roles inhost defense and cancer. Indeed, Lf has been reported toinhibit the proliferation of cancerous mammary gland epi-thelial cells and manifest a potent antiviral activity againsthuman immunodeficiency virus and human cytomegalo-virus. The Lf-binding sites on the cell surface appear to beproteoglycans and other as yet undefined protein(s).
