We will see that the general sources of vocabulary, the types of variation in grammar, and so on, are remarkably similar, wherever the variety in question is spoken. In the last three chapters we look at the way colonial Englishes are affecting British English, trace the movement towards linguistic independence in the various countries being considered, and discuss the notion of standard in more detail. This is not a book which will tell you all about Australian or Canadian English.
