It has long been accepted that bacterial quinol-fumaratereductase (QFR)generally uses a low-redox-potentialnaphthoquinone, menaquinone (MK), as the electrondonor, whereas mitochondrial QFR from facultative andanaerobic eukaryotes uses a low-redox-potential benzoqui-none, rhodoquinone (RQ), as the substrate.
