The NMR structure of 2¢,5¢ d(GGGGCCCC) was deter-mined togain insights into the structural differences between2¢,5¢-and 3¢,5¢-linked DNA duplexes that may be relevantin elucidating nature’s choice of sugar-phosphate links toencode genetic information. The oligomer assumes a duplexwith extended nucleotide repeats formed out of mostlyN-type sugar puckers. With the exception of the 5¢-terminalguanine that assumes thesyn glycosyl conformation, allother bases prefer theantiglycosyl conformation. Base pairsin the duplex exhibit slide ()1.96 A˚) and intermediate valuesfor X-displacement ()3.23 A˚), as in ADNA, while theirinclination to the helical axis is not prominent. ...
