Đối tượng nghiên cứu là vi khuẩn Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli (Lxx), tác nhân gâybệnh cằn mía gốc. Đây là một loại vi khuẩn có kích thước nhỏ (0,25 - 0,35 x 1 - 4μm, đôi khi dài đến 10 m), dạng conryne, kí sinh chuyên tính gây tắc bó mạch củacây, làm giảm sức sống và số lượng chồi tạo thành, đặc biệt là các chồi hình thànhsau khi thu hoạch.
